Getting the CKA Certificate
Just practice a lot!
I recently earned the CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) certification and wanted to share the resources I used. When I started, I knew little about containerization and Kubernetes, but with these resources, you can build these skills in no time.
(Optional) Step 1: Docker Fundamentals by Adrian Cantrill
Before diving into Kubernetes, I wanted to get familiar with Docker and containerization. I found a free, straightforward course by Adrian Cantrill that provided a quick, clear introduction to Docker.
Step 2: KodeKloud Course
The next step was to find a good course preparing for the CKA exam. After some research, I read a lot of positive reviews about the CKA course on KodeKloud. It offers video lessons and hands-on labs, but if you’re already familiar with Kubernetes, you can focus on the labs or specific videos. The course costs $35 per month and can typically be completed in 1–2 months with regular practice. A subscription also includes access to the mock exams, which are essential for testing your knowledge.
Step 3: Killer Exam Simulator
If you’ve completed the KodeKloud videos, labs, and mock exams, you’re likely well-prepared for the CKA. When you purchase the CKA exam voucher from the Linux Foundation, a practice exam from Killer.sh is included. The questions are tougher than the actual exam, but performing well here is a strong indicator you’ll do well on the CKA. Don’t skip it!
Some tips for the exam:
You are permitted to use the official Kubernetes documentation during the exam. Be sure to familiarize yourself with how to navigate it and where to find relevant information.
Practice a lot! Work through as many scenarios as possible. For commands you frequently use, try to commit them to memory using techniques like spaced repetition.
Keep track of your time. The exam lasts two hours and contains 17 questions. If you get stuck on a question, don’t spend too much time on it. Skip it, move on to the others, and return to the skipped ones later.
Conclusion: Practice
With the resources above you are more than prepared for the CKA exam. The key is to practice as many scenarios as possible and know how to find answers in the documentation. Good luck!
